Parkinson's disease is associated with significant bidirectional gut-brain axis dysfunction as evidenced by prolonged afferent and efferent neuronal signaling. Constipation severity in PD is correlated to abnormal rectal sensation and lateralized disturbance of efferent brain-gut signaling.
