CH 4 conversion is one of the most challenging chemical reactions due to its inertness in terms of physical and chemical properties. We have achieved photo-induced C-H bond breaking of CH 4 and successive C-O bond formation to form CH 3 OH concomitant with HCHO by an organometallic Ru complex with O 2 .
