The rate of preterm birth increases with increasing cervical dilation at the time of cerclage placement. However, individuals who have a cerclage placed when the cervix is 1 cm to 2.5 cm can achieve an outcome that is not significantly different from those who had a cerclage placed when the cervix is closed.
