Cardiac surgery patients with Medicare and Medicaid insurance demonstrate increased risk of allogeneic RBC transfusion; nonwhite patient groups are particularly vulnerable. Further research is needed to understand the causes and implications of these disparities, and to help ensure equitable care across patient groups.
