Primary pituitary abscess: case report and suggested management algorithm.

This report highlights the importance of early recognition and treatment of PAs. The diagnosis is commonly very difficult before surgery, due to overlapping clinical, radiological and laboratorial findings with various other pathologies. Prompt management, with surgical decompression and appropriate antibiotic treatment, typically results in a low mortality rate and higher chance of full recovery of pituitary function. We propose a management algorithm for sellar masses suspected of being PAs.
