It seems that uncontrolled diabetes induces renal insufficiency by decreasing antioxidant defense mechanisms and inducing oxidative stress. Empagliflozin might have additional benefits in addition to lowering glucose--reversing these processes, improving antioxidative capacity, and improving renal function.
