In smokers with COPD, altered glucose homeostasis is associated with local and systemic signs of increased neutrophil mobilization, but not with local proteinases. This suggests that other specific aspects of neutrophil mobilization constitute pathogenic factors that affect glucose homeostasis in COPD.
