Engineering effective bifunctional electrocatalysts that outperform the benchmark Pt/C for direct methanol proton exchange membrane fuel cells is desired and challenging. Here, we designed H-PtCu/Pt L OH catalysts with a sub-nanometer Pt(111) shell layer featuring Cu- and Co-vacancies, which exhibited high activity in acidic oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reactions.
