Abstract A case of fatal varicella pneumonia in a 37-year-old woman is described. The clinical diagnosis was supported by the post-mortem examination which revealed extensive involvement of the lungs, skin and liver. Varicella virus was isolated from vesicular fluid and fluid obtained at lung puncture after death. No predisposing factor was found that could explain the fatal outcome of the infection.
