Oxidative N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis offers the chance to perform oxidative and oxygenative transformations which give rise to various NHC-bound intermediates, paving the way to non-umpolung processes through activation of carbon atoms and heteroatoms. The aim of this review is to discuss the developments of the literature in the field of oxidative NHC-catalysis since 2014, with particular focus to pivotal intermediates and their mechanistic involvement.
