Genotyping of blood donors provides an available pool of extended matched red blood cell products for matching to recipients. Additionally genotyping can improve the identification of donors with rare phenotypes. Whilst limitations exist, genotyping may reduce the need for labour intensive serotyping, improve blood inventory management, and may be useful in donor recruitment and retention.
