A thermally stable FLP-CO 2 adduct of pronounced nucleophilic properties that forms a range of Lewis acid-base adducts with strong Lewis acids is reported. Upon addition of Tf 2 O, it generates a cationic triflate, which undergoes C-O bond cleavage to give the formal FLP adduct of the elusive dication C 2 O 3 2+ .
