Splanchnic venous thrombosis: aetiologies and a review of the literature.

Whilst the prevalence of SVT is rising with the increase in accessibility to radiological studies, it remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for clinicians. With no consensus guidelines available to direct treatment, the management of patients with SVT should be individualized and considered carefully. The potential complications of venous thrombosis, SVT recurrence or extension and the risk of bleeding need to be evaluated before the commencement of anticoagulation therapy.
