Pneumococcus is themajor cause of bacterial and invasive pneumococcal infections. Disrupting the alveolarepithelial barrier is an important step in the pathogenesis of invasivepneumococcal infections. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) maintainsthe integrity of the alveolar epithelial barrier. In this study, we showed thatsecretory pneumococcal molecules decrease the molecular weight of EGFR withoutpeptide degradation and inhibit alveolar epithelial cell proliferation viaEGFR.
