Prevalence and relative risk of severe small and small for gestational age vary according to the group of malformations and gestational age; they increase in congenital malformations of the nervous, respiratory and digestive systems, and in chromosomal abnormalities and are lower for malformations of eye, ear, face and neck and cleft lip and palate. Foetal growth considered together with malformed newborns' gestational age would allow for inferring different risks of morbidity and mortality.
