These findings indicate the experience of childhood trauma as a predisposing factor for tobacco smoking in SMDs. Cognitive control and impulsiveness were suggested as mediating mechanisms, indicating the importance of considering inhibition related self-regulatory aspects in efforts to improve health behavior in individuals with SMDs and childhood trauma.
