Identifiable risk factors associated with urological complications after renal transplantation include benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, urinary retention, and recurrent urinary tract infections. Female renal transplant patients are at increased risk of postoperative urinary tract infection and urosepsis. These patient subsets would benefit from establishing urological care and pre-transplant urological evaluation including urinalysis, urine cultures, urodynamic studies, and close follow-up post-transplant.
