The synthesis, characterization of trans -[Cr(N 2 ) 2 (depe) 2 ] (1) is described. 1 and trans -[Cr(N 2 ) 2 (dmpe) 2 ] (2) catalyze the reduction of N 2 to N 2 H 4 and NH 3 in THF using SmI 2 and H 2 O or ethylene glycol as proton sources. 2 produces the highest total fixed N for a molecular Cr catalyst to date.
