In current IOL models calcification can occur in lenses made of hydrophilic acrylate, while in IOLs made of hydrophobic acrylate "glistenings" can develop. These different material opacifications have varying impacts on optical quality parameters and in general lead to an increased intraocular light scattering. In the case of intolerable IOL material opacification, the only treatment option is its removal and the implantation of a new IOL.
