We found for the first time an association between biopsy-proven nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and RETN -420C>G promoter polymorphism. The carriers of the RETN -420C>G "CC" genotype had a 53% decreased risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Our findings, however, need to be corroborated by further studies.
