EtOH at moderate levels protects against SAA1-induced endothelial activation via both Notch-dependent and Notch-independent mechanisms. EtOH's maintenance of endothelium in a nonactivated state would be expected to preserve vessel homeostasis and protect against atherosclerosis development.
