What is new?Maternal postpartum elevated levels of cystatin C are independently associated with higher risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) later in life.Maternal pregnancy complications coupled with postpartum elevated levels of cystatin C synergistically increased future risk of CVD.What are the clinical implications? These findings, if further confirmed, suggest that women with pregnancy complications and elevated postpartum cystatin C may be at particular high risk for CVD later in life compared to women without these risk factors.
