Robotic approach may be associated with a lower risk of lung metastases compared to laparoscopic approach for mid-low rectal cancer after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy: a multivariate analysis on long-term recurrence patterns.

Lung recurrences were less frequent and with better overall survival in the robotic group. Liver recurrences were not influenced by choice of approach. Trials are needed to investigate why the robotic approach affects distant metastasis control.
