Lupus nephritis (LN) is a major cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD) in the younger population. There is marked ethnic disparity in the burden of renal disease in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), with the highest prevalence observed in Africans, Hispanics and Asians. In a US registry study, 73% of patients with LN who developed ESRD were African and Hispanic Americans.
