Term prelabor rupture of membranes is a frequent event. A 12-hour interval without onset of spontaneous labor was chosen to differentiate a physiological condition from a potentially unsafe situation that justifies antibiotic prophylaxis. Expectant management or induction of labor can each be proposed, even in case of positive screening for group streptococcus. The decision should depend on the woman's wishes and maternity unit organization (professional consensus).
