A quinoxaline-fused octaphyrin(2.0.0.0.2.0.0.0) was synthesized by the FeCl 3 -induced oxidative coupling of an α-free quinoxaline-fused tetrapyrrole. This macrocycle adopts a figure-of-eight conformation in the solid state and acts as a rudimentary chemosensor in solution. The Lewis basic anions fluoride and hydroxide induce a colour change via a deprotonation mechanism.
