An efficient method for the synthesis of M 2 B 10 H 14 (M = Na and K) has been developed. The two possible formation mechanisms of the B 10 H 14 2- anion are proposed, in which the NH 2 BH 3 - anion acts as a proton abstractor and a hydride donor. Furthermore, the B 10 H 13 - and B 10 H 15 - intermediates were detected.
