Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), also known as cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma, is an aggressive and rare tumor of the skin, with an estimated incidence of 0.3/100,000 per year in the United States1 and in Europe, in 2010's. Old age, Caucasian male, sun exposure and immunosuppression are known risk factors for MCC, which develops preferentially on head and neck skin. The etiology of MCC is not yet fully understood; however, Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) infection is frequently associated with MCC development, as viral DNA integration into the host genome is frequently detected in MCC.
