When diffusely infiltrative squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus is suspected, peritoneal lavage cytology may be useful for confirming the diagnosis; however, it should be assumed that accurate preoperative evaluation of the range of diffusely infiltrative squamous cell carcinoma is difficult.
