A new acentric barium borate, Ba 2 B 10 O 16 (OH) 2 ·(H 3 BO 3 )(H 2 O) ( 1 ), was synthesized via a hydrothermal process. Compound 1 contains two different boron oxide units of [B 5 O 10 (OH)] 6- anions and H 3 BO 3 molecules and features 9-ring channels along the c axis in a layered structure. This barium borate is a possible deep-ultraviolet nonlinear-optical crystal for its moderate second-harmonic-generation signal and wide transparency window below 190 nm.
