These data suggest that the acute accumulation of exercise-induced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) are necessary for maximal aerobic capacity. Further research is warranted on mtROS-antioxidant cell signaling cascades, and how they relate to mitochondrial function during exercise.
