A new promising method for the preparation of crystalline 2D polymers based on tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin has been developed. Radical anion {H 2 T(4-Py)P˙ - } species are used as the starting material. A new solid-state supramolecular array [{H 2 T(4-Py)P}·{Tb III (TMHD) 3 } 2 ]·2.84C 6 H 14 (1) in which porphyrin units are bridged with Tb III ions to form a self-assembled 2D polymer has been obtained. The complex contains neutral porphyrin macrocycles, which is supported by optical and magnetic data. High-spin paramagnetic Tb III ions are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled in accordance with rather long distances between them.
