Hybrid water electrolysis (HyWES) with iodide oxidation as non-OER for energy-saving H 2 production is demonstrated using self-supported sulfate ion modified Ni,Fe(oxy)hydroxide as the anode. The sulfate ions adsorbed on the catalyst show a promoting effect in achieving high electrochemical activity. The HyWES requires a voltage as low as 1.36 V to achieve the bechmark current density of 10 mA cm -2 .
