A strategically designed redox-active ligand ensures proper electronic balance in an Mn(I)-carbonyl template to induce photostability and water solubility. This newly designed Mn-carbonyl complex showcased rapid CO 2 reduction with preferential production of CO (faradaic efficiency ∼88%) as the only C 1 product in pure water, even from a flue gas resource.
