IAFs create an adverse intra-articular environment consisting of significantly increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and MMPs able to damage cartilage throughout the joint. These data suggest that the acute addition of specific inflammatory inhibitors may decrease the levels of these proinflammatory mediators.
