A paramagnetic, pentanuclear, metal-metal bonded complex comprising three metals is isolated. The Cu d x 2 - y 2 orbital of the Rh-Pt-Cu-Pt-Rh chain contains an unpaired electron. The close energetic levels and symmetric overlap of the Cu d x 2 - y 2 and Rh-Pt δ* induces a charge-transfer reaction to achieve the diamagnetic Rh-Pt-Cu-Pt-Rh complex.
