Kidney OPN expression increases in early CKD and serves a critical role in maintaining tubular mineral solubility when tubular phosphate concentrations are exceedingly high, as in late-stage CKD. Calcium-phosphate nanocrystals may be a proximal stimulus for tubular OPN production.
