Fat Mass Has Negative Effects on Bone, Especially in Men: A Cross-sectional Analysis of NHANES 2011-2018.
Rajesh K JainTamara VokesPublished in: The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism (2022)
In subjects under 60 years old, lean mass had a strong positive association with BMD. Conversely, fat mass had a moderate, negative association with BMD that was most notable in men at high levels of fat. Our results emphasize the importance of bone health in obesity and may explain site-specific increases in fracture rates in some studies of obese subjects.
