Complex kidney donors: should we stretch our limits?

Live donor kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for many patients with kidney failure. In countries with low rates of deceased organ donation, live donors are often the only opportunity for these patients to receive a kidney transplant. In Japan and many others Asian countries such as India and Philippines, live donor source accounts for over 80% of all kidney transplants. This compared to less than 50% in United Kingdom, United States and Australia 1,2 .
