The highest performers, as measured by clerkship honors grades, were mastery oriented, perceived a more positive learning environment, and were comfortable asking questions and seeking feedback for their learning. The lowest performing students were performance oriented and had negative perceptions of their learning environments. Contrary to previous findings, we found that the relationship between mastery orientation and learning approaches is not unidirectional but rather seems to be mediated by perceptions of the learning environment.
