Reduced vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression and plasma vitamin D levels are associated with aging-related prostate lesions.

Our data indicate that the aging prostate suffers from an imbalance on the intricate mechanism of tissue regulation by the vitamin D responsive system. We argue that the status of VDR expression might be determinant for the development of histopathological alterations in the aging prostate, which include premalignant lesions.
