In patients with SLE, smoking independently associated with increased BAFF and decreased IFN-γ levels, and an increased frequency of arthritis, migraine and Raynaud's phenomenon. Smoking cessation is advisable to reduce systemic inflammation, reduce disease activity and improve host defence.
